On this day: Chelsea make profit, Cole linked with United!

Ashley Cole

On the 9th January 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 9th January 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 9th January 2013…

Profit Made In Chelsea

In what really was a piece of shocking news Chelsea FC made a profit!

Since the Roman Abramovich takeover the club has continually run at a yearly loss due to mass player spends and improvements to training facilities.

But the sale of several big names and a cancellation of preference shares by BskyB in Chelsea Digital Media saw them turnover a profit of £1.4 million.

It came at a time when UEFA were talking hardball on the possibility of punishments for teams falling outside the realms of financial morality.

Leo the Devil?

20-year-old Brazilian striker Leo Baptistao was being linked with a move to Manchester United and Liverpool.

The two rival clubs reportedly had scouts watching the talented forward in action for Rayo Vallecano - as did a number of top clubs from around Europe.

However, he joined Atletico Madrid on a five-year-deal in June 2013 and is set to go on loan to Real Betis in the coming days after struggling to hold down a first-team spot.

That’s the Cole

Finally, and perhaps one of the more far-fetched transfer rumours of the summer came from The Sun - who reported that Ashley Cole was a target for Manchester United.

Cole, along with Frank Lampard, was linked with a move to United in the summer - as both players contracts ran out in that time.

However it never seemed likely either would swap Chelsea for United - especially Cole, after the breakdown of his friendship with Rio Ferdinand over the John Terry-Anton Ferdinand racism scandal.
