Napoli may struggle with Vidic wages

Napoli are said to be closing in on Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic, but the Italian press suggest that his wage demands are prohibitive.

Nemanja Vidic is one of the names on Napoli's long January shopping list, but newspaper Il Mattino reports that the Manchester United defender's salary is beyond the Partenopei's reach.

Napoli made an excellent start to the season but a series of disappointing league results have left them trailing in Juventus' wake and they were harshly eliminated from the Champions League in spite of picking up 12 points from the Group of Death.

Now Rafa Benitez is hoping to call on some reinforcements and club owner Aurelio De Laurentiis has suggested that a significant budget will be available for new players.

One name in the frame is Vidic, who would be the ideal man to steady Napoli's shaky defence, and is expected to leave Old Trafford.

The Serbian international's contract in Manchester expires in the summer and he has ruled out a contract extension.

As a result United would be likely to listen to Napoli's offer, but the Azzurri may struggle to meet Vidic's personal terms.

Il Mattino states that Vidic doesn't want to take a pay cut from the £3.3m per year he earns at United because there are a number of clubs interested in him.

Juventus and Fiorentina are amongst the other teams said to be monitoring Vidic's situation and it would be a massive blow to Napoli to see either of their Serie A rivals swoop for him.
