Burnley set to beat Leeds United to sign Championship striker

Burnley

Burnley manager Sean Dyche has confirmed Ashley Barnes is having a medical at the club ahead of a proposed move

Brighton & Hove Albion striker Ashley Barnes has been on the radar for a number of clubs in this transfer window, but it now seems as if he will be joining Burnley.

Boss Sean Dyche has confirmed that Barnes is undergoing a medical ahead of a proposed move to Turf Moor. Brighton had already rejected a bid from the Lancashire outfit on New Year's Day reported to be in the region on £750,000.

The Clarets have now upped their bid, and Brighton have deemed it to be acceptable with the striker's contract due to expire at the end of the season.

This will be a blow to Leeds United who were also tracking the former Plymouth Argyle striker. Leeds had already completed the signing of Cameron Stewart on loan from Hull City today and were hoping to sign up Barnes too.

Burnley are the surprise of the season in the Championship so far, with few expecting them to have such a strong first half of the season. The promotion candidates are hoping Barnes will add to the goal power already at the club. Sam Vokes and Danny Ings have been in superb form for them all season, and they will now add competition in that area. They have already scored 25 goals in the league between them.

Barnes has scored six goals for Brighton this season, and had scored 47 goals in his previous three years at the club.

He endured play-off heartache with Brighton last season when they were knocked out in the semi-final to Crystal Palace, but he will be hoping to get promoted with Burnley now who are currently in second place.
