Monaco’s €25million midfielder linked with Manchester United move

Reports in Portugal claim Manchester United are interested in signing Monaco midfielder Joao Moutinho.

Soon, there will not be a midfielder in Europe who has not been linked with Manchester United.

The club’s latest defeat – at the hands of Sunderland in the Capital One Cup semi-final first-leg – proved yet again that David Moyes’ midfielder is not up to it. But the problem with having such a glaring weakness is two-fold.

Firstly, you are linked with every player under the sun, and secondly, potential selling clubs know how desperate you are for a solution that will grow far more costly as a result.

For a while, the likes of Koke, Nemanja Matic and William Carvalho have been the names most regularly thrown into the transfer tombola that often makes little sense but plenty of juicy headlines. But now another name can be added to the list; a player who was once a transfer rumour regular prior to his €25million move to Monaco last summer.

That man is former FC Porto midfielder Joao Moutinho, who according to Portuguese newspaper A Bola is just one of a whole raft of players Moyes is running the rule over.

The paper has picked up on reports from England claiming the former Everton boss will be given significant funds to transform his side in the months to come. But they have also added Moutinho’s name to the mix, despite the player being just one year into a five-year contract with the Ligue 1 club.

This may be one we can instantly throw in the special bin reserved for recycling ridiculous rumours. But then again, this is football, and stranger things have happened.
