The future of many Manchester United players is currently in doubt, in part due to a number of contracts coming to an end, but also due to the need for drastic surgery on a team that looks about as far-removed from Premier League champions as you can imagine.
One player linked with a summer departure is Nemanja Vidic, whose influence and importance at Old Trafford have waned as a result of age and injury – along with the development of the likes of Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling.
Quotes from Vidic’s agent have suggested his time at United really is coming to an end, with Silvano Martina reportedly saying the following to Radio CRC:
“Vidic is a very good player and will have no trouble finding a new club. For the time being we are remaining calm. However, at the moment, I would rule out an extension with Manchester United.”
With doubts remaining about the future of Rio Ferdinand, it appears United’s defence could be about to go through something of a transformation, with at least one new arrival almost certain if both he and Vidic depart this summer.
But while a move to Italy has been suggested, Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo has another suggestion.
They claim Vidic’s likely Old Trafford exit could see him “fulfil his dream” to play for Barcelona.
The report claims that his relationship with Gerard Pique will help in any possible move, while they also refer to the Spanish champions’ need to reinforce at the back and cite Vidic as possibly a more realistic alternative to the likes of David Luiz and Thiago Silva – who both continue to be linked with a switch to the Nou Camp.
For now Vidic’s future remains a mystery, but if his time at United really is all but over, Barcelona could get a very good defender who, despite his injury problems, still has much to offer.
