Manchester United fell to another defeat as they went down 2-1 in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final last night.
It was a disappointing result for a side that would have been hoping to bounce back just a few days after a shock home defeat at the hands of Swansea City which sent David Moyes’ side out of the FA Cup.
United’s only goal last night came courtesy of their captain Nemanja Vidic, who showed some visual frustration and obvious emotion after he’d equalised following a Ryan Giggs own goal which put Sunderland ahead.
Vidic continues to be linked with a move away from the club in the press despite being offered the opportunity to stay with the Premier League champions.
Although he’s not been producing some of his best performances in Manchester United colours this season, he remains a very important player for the club and United will try hard to get him to commit to a new contract before the end of the season.
“The player's contract is expiring, but Napoli haven't contacted me. Man United have offered him a renewal and a number of other clubs have approached him,” his representative Silvano Martina told CRC in Italy.
Martina went on to confirm that Vidic does want to finish the rest of the current season with United, which guarantees that the club will have more than just this month to try and get him to sign a new deal.
Vidic’s core qualities as a central defender will make him a high profile target for several European clubs.
However, United can keep him and stand a better chance of securing him if they can turn things round and go on a positive run over the second half of the season, finishing in the top four and possibly securing a piece of silverware.
Here’s what United fans made of his performance last night.
