Last weekend, Twitter was awash with unsubstantiated reports claiming Liverpool had agreed a deal to sign Bayer Leverkusen forward Sidney Sam.
The German international has been in outstanding form for Sami Hyypia’s men, and with an unbelievable €2.5million release-clause, a whole host of clubs across Europe were tipped to make a move for a player who is worth considerably more than that.
The 25-year-old will move in the summer, and becomes the latest big name German-based forward to switch Bundesliga allegiance following Robert Lewandowski’s agreement to join Bayern Munich from Borussia Dortmund.
Sam would have been an outstanding addition to Brendan Rodgers’ side, and given Manchester United’s struggles and Tottenham Hotspur’s need for more goals, any one of a number of Premier League clubs would surely have welcomed him.
But as it is, a player who already has 11 goals in just 19 games this season will soon be playing for Schalke.
