Liverpool in hunt for Suarez's compatriot Abel Hernandez

Uruguay striker could be joined at Anfield by Palermo forward as Brendan Rodgers eyes Champions League qualification.

Brendan Rodgers could bolster his striking options with a move for Luis Suarez’s Uruguay team-mate Abel Hernandez, according to the Mirror and Tuttomercato.

The 23-year-old forward is currently playing in Serie B with Palermo, where he has netted 11 times in 17 appearances this season.

He has also scored 7 goals in his 11 caps for Uruguay and is believed to be a good friend of international colleague Suarez.

While Liverpool have not been lacking for goals recently with the outstanding form of Suarez, Daniel Sturridge has been injured for several weeks and Iago Aspas is yet to find the net with any regularity.

With this in mind, Rodgers could do well to provide another goalscoring option to help fire the team into the Champions League, especially one that already has a rapport with his star man.

However, Hernandez’s goals return was poor in Serie A, only scoring 10 goals in 56 league appearances in the previous three seasons.

While his efficiency has improved in Serie B, it would still be a big ask to step up and perform in the Premier League.

Liverpool are not the only team eyeing his signature, with Fiorentina manager Vincenzo Montella also keen on the speedy striker. Arsenal were also linked with him back on transfer deadline day and could yet re-ignite their interest given their more desperate need for a striker.

Fiorentina are currently in fourth place in Serie A, three points off a Champions League place, and have scored less goals than the three teams above them in the table.

Montella is also tracking Liverpool’s winger Oussama Assaidi, currently on loan at Stoke City, according to the Stoke Sentinel.

The 25-year-old Moroccan has caught the eye in recent weeks with three stunning Premier League strikes but it is unlikely he has a future at Anfield where he only made four league appearances last season.
