The 32-year-old skipper’s agent has now thrown his future into doubt at the Premier League champions but could David Moyes use the centre-back as a makeweight in a deal to sign a player themselves.
Currently, Serie A side Napoli are understood to be the frontrunners to sign the Serbia international with his contract expiring in June, but United will likely be reluctant to lose him on a free transfer at the end of the season.
Could Moyes and his scouting network possibly negotiate a deal to sell Vidic in January in a part-exchange deal for one of the finest play-makers in Italy? United have been hot on the heels of numerous midfielders in recent months but failed in pursuits of Cesc Fabregas and Ander Herrera in Spain as well as Daniele Di Rossi in Italy.
Perhaps David Moyes would be interested in 26-year-old Napoli star and Slovakia international Marek Hamsik who is regarded as one of the most technically gifted midfielders on the continent.
The problem, however, may be that Napoli boss Rafael Benitez is unlikely to be willing to let the £35 million-rated midfielder move but, for around the same £13 million valuation as Vidic, he might be more willing to exchange a player like Gokhan Inler.
The 29-year-old Switzerland international could provide quality and experience in Moyes' midfield at Old Trafford and is valued at £12.5 million. The Napoli midfielder has been linked with a move to England previously and refused to rule out interest in signing for a Premier League club when he was linked with leaders Arsenal last month.
Inler can function as a defensive midfielder or a central midfielder in his preferred position and would bring with him the kind of experience lacking in the side since the retirement of Paul Scholes in the summer.
His 70 caps for his country, as well as his near-300 appearances in Serie A, make him an interesting prospect for David Moyes to consider along with the more expensive Hamsik, especially if the skipper has decided he no longer sees his future at Manchester United.
