The Spaniard has struggled for regular minutes at Barcelona, finding his path to first team football largely blocked by the experienced Dani Alves.
Spanish newspaper AS maintained a fortnight ago that talks of a Camp Nou extension for Montoya had reached a full stop, confirmed by his agent.
The news seemed to suggest a capture may be on the cards for Liverpool – though representative Josep Maria Orobitg also cited serious interest stemming from Serie A.
According to Sky Sport Italia correspondent Manuele Baiocchini, Roma have firmly inserted themselves into the race by making an enquiry with Orobitg himself.
He further maintains that negotiations between Montoya and his current employers aren’t dead, but haven’t come close to a conclusion either.
Liverpool may have to act quickly if they are to get their man, as the Italian capital club have demonstrated real intent already in the winter transfer window.
The Montoya situation remains open for now, with Roma not having yet submitted a formal offer, but the Reds may have serious competition on their hands.
