Liverpool face threat in pursuit of free agent Barcelona star

Per the Italian press, AS Roma have made an enquiry for Liverpool target Martin Montoya.

The Spaniard has struggled for regular minutes at Barcelona, finding his path to first team football largely blocked by the experienced Dani Alves.

An expiring contract and dearth of full back options piqued the interest of Brendan Rodgers, with the Reds reportedly in talks for the 22-year-old’s signature since late November.

Spanish newspaper AS maintained a fortnight ago that talks of a Camp Nou extension for Montoya had reached a full stop, confirmed by his agent.

The news seemed to suggest a capture may be on the cards for Liverpool – though representative Josep Maria Orobitg also cited serious interest stemming from Serie A.

According to Sky Sport Italia correspondent Manuele Baiocchini, Roma have firmly inserted themselves into the race by making an enquiry with Orobitg himself.

He further maintains that negotiations between Montoya and his current employers aren’t dead, but haven’t come close to a conclusion either.

Roma have already captured Blaugrana youngster Tonny Sanabria – a former Arsenal target – along with highly-rated 19-year-old Brazilian Leandro Paredes this January.

Radja Nainggolan was also netted from Cagliari this week in a move for an experienced midfield presence – though the Giallorossi appearing keen to continue building for the future with Montoya.

Liverpool may have to act quickly if they are to get their man, as the Italian capital club have demonstrated real intent already in the winter transfer window.

The Montoya situation remains open for now, with Roma not having yet submitted a formal offer, but the Reds may have serious competition on their hands.
