Liverpool transfer news: Reds face competition for Benfica winger, update on Barca target

Some of the latest transfer news, and more, involving Liverpool Football Club this Wednesday morning.

Liverpool face competition from Swansea City if they want to land Benfica winger Ola John according to the Daily Mail.

The 21-year-old has played seven times for his club this season, scoring just the one goal. Ajax and AC Milan have been amongst the clubs who have also been linked with the player.

The Liverpool Echo reports that the Reds have scouted Dundee United starlet Andrew Robertson, but will not make a bid for the 19-year-old – with Merseyside rivals Everton also interested in the player.

In the same article they gave an update on Barcelona defender Martin Montoya’s future – who is a target of the Reds after managing director Ian Ayre had met with the player’s representatives in November, with Montoya saying there’s no rush for him to sign a new deal at the Nou Camp.

Liverpool have been sweating on the fitness of vice-captain Daniel Agger as he limped off in the 2-0 win over Oldham Athletic in the FA Cup on Sunday. The club is set to receive scan results on a calf injury the Dane sustained in the win over the Latics.

However, the Liverpool Echo is reporting that Mamadou Sakho is in line for an earlier than expected return to the side after recovering from a hamstring injury.

Sakho limped off in the 2-1 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and looked to be facing at least a month on the sidelines but could be fit enough for a return against Stoke City.

Glen Johnson – who limped off in the 2-0 win over Hull City on New Years’ Day – is also likely to be fit for the trip to the Britannia Stadium.
