Serie A strugglers Bologna have lost patience with coach Stefano Pioli and are expected to bring in Davide Ballardini within the next few hours.

Bologna have announced the dismissal of Stefano Pioli in the wake of a 2-0 defeat at Catania last weekend and Davide Ballardini is reportedly ready to step in.

It always looked likely to be a relegation dogfight for Bologna this term and that is proving to be the case with the Emilia-Romagna side fourth from bottom on 15 points.

There had been constant speculation over the last few weeks that Pioli could be sacked and the coach made the extraordinary statement that his team's 'backsides were on the barbecue' ahead of the trip to Catania last weekend.

But his men delivered another disappointing performance in Sicily and the club have decided to change direction.

"Bologna FC would like to communicate that in the light of recent disappointing results the club has decided with great regret to remove coach Stefano Pioli from his position," a statement on Bologna's official website reads.

"We would like to thank Pioli and his staff for their work and their great professionalism and passion."

The new boss is widely reported to be decided with Tuttosport clear that it will be ex-Genoa man Davide Ballardini, who turned down the Bologna hot seat two years ago.
