Simeone tempted by Balotelli - Could he replace Arsenal target Costa?

Speaking ahead of Atletico Madrid’s Champions League tie with Milan, Diego Simeone had some interesting words to say about ex-Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli.

Argentine boss Diego Simeone has completely transformed Atletico Madrid’s fortunes since taking over in midway through the 2011/12 season. Under his guidance, Los Rojiblanco’s have won the Europa League, The European Super Cup, the Copa Del Rey and significantly closed the gap on La Liga’s Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Simeone’s debut Champions League campaign saw them breeze through the group stages, claiming 16 points from a possible 18, and therefore setting themselves up with a knockout tie with Mario Balotelli’s AC Milan.

Mario Balotelli has been in decent form for the Rossoneri this season, despite AC Milan performing woefully short of their expectations. Balotelli has scored six goals in 12 Serie A starts, recording 79 shots in total – 48 more than the next best Kaka.

Despite being Milan’s standout performer, the circus surrounding the striker remains and according to the English press, the 23-year-old could be sold during the January transfer window with Chelsea a possible destination.

Diego Simeone has commented on the situation, and according to Spanish press, he added in an Italian interview that he’d be able to get the best out of Mario’s fiery personality.

"In his way he’s a rebel. I have read that Milan would like to sell the player. That’s better for us".

Asked whether he’d be able to handle Balotelli, Simeone responded confidently:

"Give him to me and you will see what it is like to have fire in the soul."

Despite club President Silvio Berlusconi assuring the Milan fans that Balotelli will not be making a move this January, rumours continue to spread as the ex-Man City forward’s behaviour still lands the Italian in trouble and soon or later it becomes unbearable.
