Angel Di Maria is on hot water today over in Spain after he responded to boos from Real Madrid fans last night by grabbing his crotch as he was replaced by Gareth Bale.
Real Madrid comfortably ran out 3-0 winners against Celta Vigo but the home crowd was not pleased with the performance of the Argentinian winger and they responded audibly when Carlo Ancelotti decided to remove him.
Ancelotti responded quickly by saying it was a silly mistake on the part of the player and he’s also tried to quash rumours linking Di Maria with a move away from the club this month.
However, the player himself has given a rather bizarre explanation for the gesture.
“It wasn't towards anyone. I was just uncomfortable and I kept on running. If I were angry then I wouldn't have high-fived anyone. I went off the pitch completely naturally. People are always waiting for me to do something,” said Di Maria as per AS.
This isn’t the first time that Di Maria has been subjected to abuse from the Real Madrid home support.
Even before La Liga and Spanish football took a break for Christmas and New Year, Di Maria was being booed by the club’s fans because of speculation over his future and an apparent desire to leave Los Blancos in the near future.
It’s something that he will be used to but it’s only going to get worse if he continues to make gestures and little actions such as this in response.
There’s a good chance that Arsenal, Manchester United and the other sides interested in him won’t be able to sign him this month, which means he’ll have to get his head down and cope with being a Real Madrid player until at least after the World Cup.
“I have never had any problems with the fans. I felt that half the stadium was applauding me, the other half was booing me. I always have to clarify everything I do. If it were anyone else no-one would have said anything but when it's me everything gets blown out of all proportion,” he added.
Di Maria’s future was instantly thrown into doubt when Real Madrid signed the man who replaced him last night, Gareth Bale.
Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo are seemingly the perfect players to have on either side of the pitch but while Di Maria has shown he can do a job for the club this season, it seems a lot of fans have already made up their minds.
