Liverpool transfer is not quite the sure thing it was being cracked up to be a few days ago.
From the moment the transfer window opened, Liverpool's deal for Mohamed Salah of Basle had appeared one which was almost certain to be completed.
On Friday former Spurs striker and Egyptian countryman Mido claimed Liverpool were set to sign Salah 'next week', but there is no sign yet of progress.
In fact developments appear to have taken a backwards step over the past 24 hours.
Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano claims to have spoken with the agent of Salah yesterday, and while he confirmed Liverpool's interest, a deal is far from complete - even warning of other clubs abroad who want the Basel winger.
Sascha Empacher, Mohamed Salah's agent, told me: "There are several clubs interested in Salah, especially from Spain, Germany and UK"— Fabrizio Romano (@FabRomano21) January 6, 2014
Empacher, Salah agent, told me about Liverpool: "Talks with Liverpool are ongoing. They want him. But they need agreement with Basel" #LFC— Fabrizio Romano (@FabRomano21) January 6, 2014
Salah's performances in the Champions League have made him over of Europe's hottest properties, and Basel are likely to want to get a bidding war going.
It leaves Liverpool facing a potential repeat of their summer pursuit of Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who at one point it was reported was on his way, only for the player to sign with Borussia Dortmund instead.
Indeed with 'German clubs' touted as showing an interest, and Dortmund likely to want to appease fans after Robert Lewandowksi confirmed his impending exit this week, a repeat is not out of the question.
The news Egyptian football website King Fut reported the interest of Russian giants Zenit St Petersburg is also ominous news, but Liverpool have as good a chance as any. However the move is far from being the done deal it was talked up as being, and fans may want to brace themselves for potential disappointment now, just in case.
