Johnson has been rumoured to be in contract talks for a while now with his current deal running out at the end of next season, meaning he may have to take a pay cut after signing for Liverpool under the previous ownership – some reports in the past have indicated his wage is as high as £139,000 per week.
Brendan Rodgers has spoken highly of Johnson on several occasions this season, saying: ‘Glen is the type of player you don’t realise what you’re missing until he’s not in the team.’
Ever since his return from a foot injury he picked up earlier on in the season against Manchester United his form hasn’t been as good as it can be.
Some will suggest Liverpool’s interest in Barcelona’s Martin Montoya could be viewed as trying to find a replacement for Johnson along with youngster Jon Flanagan impressing on the opposite side of the defence whilst Johnson has occupied his natural position on the right.
What may stop Liverpool from selling and instead tie him down to a deal with less wages is Flanagan’s inexperience and Martin Kelly’s injury problems in recent years.
Wenger is said to be on the lookout for another right-back due to Bacary Sagna’s contract running out at the end of the season.
