With three Gunners strikers out injured, could hat-trick hero step up to first-team duties rather than go out on loan?
The 18-year-old striker, who has already featured for the Arsenal first-team on two occasions this season, is highly thought of at the Emirates, and given the raft of injuries the Gunners' forward line has suffered in recent days, Akpom may have just played his way onto the cusp of the Arsenal first team.
On Monday night the Arsenal Youth side side hammered Peterborough Youth 6-1 at London Road, and alongside hugely impressive Daniel Crowley, Akpom stood out, scoring a fantastic 25 minute hat-trick. His first was a simple header past Peterborough keeper Luke O'Reilly, and another strike would follow soon after when Crowley played him through to round the goalkeeper and find the net. He completed his hat-trick in the 62nd minute, receiving the ball from Crowley yet again, before rolling his effort home.
Akpom, who netted for the first team on the pre-season tour of Asia, had been linked with a loan move to Brentford recently, though given Walcott's injury and the youngster's impressive form, it is likely he will be called on as back-up at least until the club can bring in a replacement.
He made his Premier League debut against Sunderland in September, coming on in injury time for Giroud. Akpom also played for over 60 minutes in the League Cup win over West Brom, netting in the penalty shoot-out.
Even if he does go out on loan, it is fair to say Akpom could be enjoying a first-team spot at the club in the near future.
