While there he scored 45 goals in 123 Championship games and was signed by West Ham. This proved unsuccessful and he has fared little better at Cardiff City.
Due to injuries and now a lack of chances the striker is looking to rebuild his reputation and could become a key part in a Championship club's promotion campaign.
Here are the five clubs we think Nicky Maynard could join this month.
1) Leeds United
Brian McDermott is actively seeking a striker with a good reputation to help fire Leeds United into the top 6 this season. Despite being linked to Bradford City's striker Nahki Wells, the former Reading manager has indicated that he may be too expensive for the West Yorkshire club. And with finances in mind, perhaps he could be enticed into shrewd loan move for the Cardiff striker.
2) Nottingham Forest
Despite already being well placed in the top six, Nottingham Forest have been lacking in goals from their strikers. Simon Cox and Darius Henderson remain the clubs joint top goalscoring strikers, with 5 apiece. Although money is reportedly available for a big name striker to come in, perhaps Forest could save themselves a few million by signing Nicky Maynard.
3) Sheffield Wednesday
20th place Wednesday currently sit just one point above the bottom three and could do with boost in January to enhance their chances of survival. Despite the future of the club being up in the air, both management and ownership understand what relegation could do to Wednesday and signing a player of Maynard's quality could be key to preventing that.
Nigel Adkins has endured a torrid run of games that has seen Reading slip completely out of the top 6 and could undoubtedly use a boost in January to put them back on track. Adam Le Fondre has publicly spoken of wanting to leave and if that was to happen then Reading could decide to sign Maynard to replace him.
5) Wigan Athletic
Wigan have severely lacking goals, especially in the forward positions and they're reportedly looking to strengthen in January. The Cardiff man could certainly aid their attempts of breaking into the top 6, but it is believed that Wigan would prefer a younger loan deal from one of the top clubs but it could be argued that the experience of Maynard would be a better option.
