A round up of the latest news and transfer stories connected to Liverpool from the past 24 hours.
Raheem Sterling has revealed Brendan Rodgers gave a harsh half-time team talk during Liverpool’s FA Cup clash against Oldham yesterday. Liverpool went on to win the match 2-0 but the first 45 minutes was nothing compared to some of the great football the side has produced this season.
“The manager told us to get our mentality right for this game because we knew what defeated us last time [against Oldham]. His message at half-time was that we needed to move the ball a lot faster and get them working and chasing the ball,” Sterling told the club website.
Rodgers himself has spoken of his general relief of avoiding a replay against Oldham, suggesting that his team need to get better after battling through a shaky performance against the League One side.
The performance was marked by a first goal in Liverpool colours for summer signing Iago Aspas. There have been suggestions that the £7.7 million man could have been axed and he’s revealed his delight at getting off the mark.
“It's wonderful for me to score my first goal here. It's difficult when you don't play all the games, but I'm very happy to have scored,” he told Liverpool’s official site.
The big transfer story from today links MK Dons teenager Dele Alli with a move to Liverpool. The 17-year-old has featured in 13 out of 23 league games for the Dons this season and the Mirror reported that Brendan Rodgers watched the youngster play in MK Dons’ draw against Wigan over the weekend.
Alli is a player that MK Dons boss Karl Robinson has previously said is worth ‘millions’.
In another transfer story, the Mirror has also linked Liverpool with a potential swoop for former Chelsea forward Salomon Kalou. Kalou is thought to be tempted by the prospect of returning to Premier League football.
Former Egypt coach Bob Bradley has hinted that FC Basel star Mohamed Salah could well be on his way to Liverpool. The £8 million rated winger has been strongly linked with a switch to Anfield over the last couple of weeks.
“He left Egypt, first to FC Basel and from what I read and hear in the coming days you'll see his name again because there will be a big transfer to a Premier League team,” he is quoted by the LFC Zone.
Liverpool will have a fight on their hands to sign Derby County youngster Will Hughes after Derby’s CEO said the player wasn’t for sale. Liverpool are thought to hold a first option agreement on the 18-year-old but Sam Rush has said there’s a great deal for him still to achieve at Derby.
Liverpool defender Kolo Toure has said the club can cope with their current injury list. Daniel Agger became the latest set for a spell in the treatment room when he was taken off against Oldham in the FA Cup win yesterday.
“It’s part of the game. We have other players who can step in and play. It’s not easy when you have to make a lot of changes. But that’s what pre-season was for – to get everyone used to playing with each other,” he told the Liverpool website.
