Petter Veland, La Liga correspondent for Norwegian TV channel C More, has tipped Real Madrid star Fabio Coentrao to move to Manchester United by the end of this month.
The Portuguese left-back is someone that David Moyes tried to bring in at the back end of the summer transfer window, running out of time to do a deal as Real Madrid retained him for first team cover.
Left-back is going to be a very important position for Moyes and Manchester United over the next few months, with Patrice Evra showing no sign of renewing his current contract with the club.
Moyes has used Alexander Buttner although his summer pursuit of Coentrao and Everton’s Leighton Baines suggests that he doesn’t have a tremendous amount of confidence in the Dutchman.
One of Veland’s colleagues, Jan Aage Fjortoft, revealed on Twitter five reasons that the La Liga expert believes the Portuguese could end up as a United player before the month is out.
Those reasons include the fact United tried to sign him in the summer, the fact he can play in the Champions League and the fact that Coentrao will be looking to play more games leading up to the World Cup in the summer.
The question for Moyes now is whether he gambles and goes for the 25-year-old this month or whether he takes a more reflective approach and tries to make a big money signing at left-back next summer.
There is still a chance that Evra could sign a new deal at Old Trafford which would temporarily delay the left-back problem but considering Coentrao’s quality and his age, someone could well bite if United don’t.
