Reports in Spain claim Xabi Alonso will sit down with his agent and Real Madrid officials to discuss a new deal this week.
As Xabi Alonso nears the end of his current Real Madrid contract, rumours continue to link him with a return to the Premier League.
For a while, it appeared Chelsea were the favourites to sign him, with certain reports believing a reunion with Jose Mourinho was all but certain.
That was until the Spanish midfielder reportedly performed something of a U-turn, and opted for a contract renewal – or at least discussions – at the Bernabeu.
Reports in the British press at the weekend claimed Alonso had been offered to Chelsea, along with Manchester United and Manchester City, in an attempt to get a fee for a player who would be a free-agent come July. But now it appears those claims are even wider of the mark than first thought.
Spanish newspaper El Confidencial is now claiming Alonso and his agent have a meeting at Real arranged for some time this week.
The story claims it will be the first formal meeting between the player, his representatives and his current club for six months, and that Real are keen to announce a contract extension swiftly.
The report also makes reference to the apparent interest of other clubs, and there is obviously the suggestion – as in any negotiation – that this interest was used to ensure an acceptable deal was offered to a player who is still seen as vital to the La Liga club.
Claiming Alonso was ready to leave Real, the report concludes that “now the situation is different”. How different may well be seen in the coming days, provided a new contract is agreed.
