€37m Barcelona star's comments suggest exit is unlikely

Barcelona's Alexis Sanchez has piled praise onto Gerardo Martino, suggesting an imminent move away is unlikely.

Barcelona star Alexis Sanchez has piled the praise onto current boss Gerardo Martino, claiming the coach has given him the confidence he needs to succeed.

Alexis is one of the names regularly linked with a move away from Barcelona when a transfer window comes along, but he’s turned himself into one of the most important players for the club fresh off a hat-trick as La Liga returned this weekend.

“The Christmas holidays with all my friends back home in Tocopilla did me the world of good. I think that Martino has given me the confidence that every player needs. A confident player can contribute much more than just scoring goals,” he told AS.

Several big European clubs, including Premier League sides could be interested in a player like Alexis at the moment but his comments suggest that any desire to leave Barcelona is non-existent.

Arsenal are a side that would surely be interested in a player of his calibre because as an out and out wide man, he’d release someone like Lukas Podolski to go and play a more favoured central attacking role.

Chelsea are another side that could be interested and not just because Jose Mourinho may be keen to take a player away from a side that became his arch rival during his time in Spain.

Chelsea don’t have too many players who can hog one side of the pitch and a genuinely world class winger would create a fresh and dynamic edge to the current Chelsea team.

Manchester United would also surely be interested in their former transfer target, especially given their current plight under David Moyes.

However, as good as Alexis would be for either of those clubs, it’s highly unlikely that anything is going to happen and any speculation this month will be nothing but fodder from the rumour mill.

His contract with Barcelona doesn’t expire until 2016 so new contract talks are going to be just around the corner and that’s when the speculation will flair up again but as long as Martino stays in charge of Barcelona, it’s likely that Alexis will remain a Barcelona player.
