Rafa Benitez' Napoli side are expected to be one of the busier Serie A sides this transfer window, and a move for Lyon midfielder Maxime Gonalons is high on their list.
His pending arrival however suggests there could be a player outgoing, and that man is tipped to be Gokhan Inler.
The Swiss international captain of 70 caps was left on the bench for two of Napoli's four December games including the 2-0 win over Arsenal.
Swiss website Infoticker.ch wrote at the weekend that Inler is the man to solve Manchester United's problems, writing: "29-year-old Inler is still high on the ManU list."
They value Inler at €20 million but it's improbable to think United would pay so much for a player at 29, with Robin van Persie an exception to their usual transfer policy.
United's interest has also been reported by French newspaper Le10sport, but the likelihood of such a transfer has been thrown into doubt by David Moyes' recent comments.
"I don't think so," he told reporters when asked if he would buy this month."I think most of the business will be more towards the summer rather than January."
While adding after the cup defeat: "There is an urgency that we would like to bring people in but are those players available in January? So there is no point in me hyping it up because the players we would like to bring in are probably not available, not because we don’t want to do it.”
Making an exception for Inler, if United could negotiate the price down however may be a useful short-term move.
Inler has made 43 tackles in 14 games this season, an average of 2.9 per game, with an average of 1.9 interceptions per match.
