La Liga side Sevilla are in the midst of a fairly average season by their standards.
Stuck in 7th spot, seven points behind 4th place and with a disappointing away record, the former Europa League winners are in the market for reinforcements and Spanish press Estadio Deportivo report that Turkish central midfielder Mehmet Topal is a transfer target.
The Turkish international has La Liga experience after playing for Valencia CF for two seasons. The midfielder moved to the Mestalla from Galatasary for approximately €5.5 million in the summer of 2010.
At Valencia, Topal gained Champions League experience and helped the club to a third placed finish in La Liga. However, after losing his place to legendary midfielder David Albelda, the 27-year-old returned to Turkey with the other Turkish giants Fenerbache for a reported €4.5 million in 2012.
Now it appears that the player is back on the move once again and another return to La Liga with Sevilla is a real possibility.
One team that could potentially be delighted with the news that Sevilla are targeting a midfielder is Liverpool. The Reds have been credited had a long interest in Sevilla midfielder Ivan Rakitic and now a possible replacement is on the cards, perhaps the Croatian’s availability has just been notified, or at least they are making contingency plans.
Ivan Rakitic has been in fabulous form this season, starting 15 La Liga games and being influential in the majority of them.
From midfield, the 25-year-old has scored seven goals and assisted another six. Sevilla’s attacking play is based around the Croation, averaging 58.5 passes per game and supplying his forward players with 40 key passes during the current campaign.
With the midfielder’s current deal set to expire in the summer of 2015, up-coming talks have been planned but so far nothing has been decided. Speaking to Sevilla’s official website, Rakitic confirmed:
‘There is nothing new to say -- we have all been on holidays. I have not been on the mobile, just letting the days pass’
‘We are going to sit down, we will talk and then we will see what we can do. Everyone knows that I am always excited about training and playing games, being around the city -- they know that I enjoy life here, and it is really nice to be a part of Sevilla’
However, with each passing day that goes by and no new news confirmed, it’s looking increasingly likely that negotiations over extending the deal have come to a standstill.
Regarding Sevilla’s reported new interest in another midfielder, perhaps now is the time that Brendan Rodgers activates his €40 million release clause
