Reports have claimed that Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund are both in the hunt to sign Senegalese defender Papy Djilobodji.
According to reports in French newspaper Le Parisien, German giants Borussia Dortmund will compete with Chelsea in the race to sign Nantes defender Papy Djilobodji.
The 25-year-old central defender started his career in his native Senegal, playing for top division side ASC Saloum. After two successful seasons, the defender transferred to lower league French side US Senart-Moissy. He was later sold on to French side Nantes, who were at the time playing in the second division.
At Nantes he helped the side win promotion to the top division last season. Their debut season in Ligue 1 has so far been a good one, with the side challenging for a Europa League spot.
Djilobodji has inspired the Nantes backline, helping the side to multiple clean sheets and conceding just 17 goals in 19 league games. Making a total of 34 tackles and 45 interceptions, Djilobodji has been touted as currently one of the best centre backs in France
The 6ft 4inch defender has attracted a lot of interest, and the Nantes directors have decided to give the Senegalese defender a €20 million price tag. Whilst the price tag may be an attempt to ward off potential suitors, the defender has admitted himself that he wants to test himself at a higher level.
He said: "I want to play in big clubs competing in the Champions League and win it. The road is still long but I work every day to make that happen."
Borussia Dortmund are one of the clubs sniffing around, and after the successful signing of Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from the French league the Bundesliga giants will have the confidence to enter the market once again. A potential partnership with Mats Hummels could give the the Black and Yellows one of the meanest defences in Europe.
Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea on the other hand are another team linked with the defender. The Blues have reportedly sent scouts over to France and are probably considering an offer given Dortmund’s recent interest. With the futures of David Luiz and John Terry not concrete, perhaps Papy Djilobodji can become the next long-term prospect at Stamford Bridge.
Will Chelsea make an offer for the Senegalese central defender?
