On this day: Ba dream debut, £20m striker to Spurs and Djourou on his way

Johann Djourou

On the 5th January 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 5th January 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 5th January 2013 …

Djour-io

Arsenal allowed Swiss international Johan Djourou to join Hannover 96 on loan until the end of the season. The player’s limited talents had finally caught up with him and with him way down the pecking order at The Emirates he moved out to the Bundesliga on a temporary spell.

That seems to be it as far as his Arsenal career is confirmed. He is out on loan at Hamburg at the moment and is not expected to be welcomed back next season.

Saint Ba-Score-a-few

What a debut that was. Demba Ba bagged two goals on his Chelsea debut after his £7 million switch from Newcastle United.

Chelsea beat Southampton 5-1 at St Marys in the FA Cup and Ba just about gained clearance from the FA to play in the game.

His first goal for Chelsea coming after 35 minutes, while Fernando Torres’ took him about 700 minutes more.

Dam luck

Tottenham Hotspur were, once again, being linked with a move for Internacional striker Leandro Damiao, in a deal for £20 million.

The Brazilian striker was being lined up as a solution to their striker shortage but in the end no deal ever happened.

But they should be thankful.

Over the past 12 months Damiao has struggled with injury and form - with his goalscoring record plummeting since the move was mooted.

Now he is set to join Santos this month after agreeing a deal last month.
