Napoli preparing to fight Barca for Reina

Pepe Reina

Reports in Italy suggest that Napoli will challenge Barcelona for the permanent signature of goalkeeper Pepe Reina when his loan from Liverpool ends.

Napoli currently have Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina on loan for the season but the Azzurri are reportedly hoping to keep him on a permanent basis.

Barcelona are widely believed to be aiming to pounce for Reina once his period at the Stadio San Paolo expires in June and have a good chance of convincing the Spaniard to sign.

The 'keeper has publicly stated his desire to play for Barcelona and it looks likely that a fee could be agreed with Liverpool.

However, Reina has settled well at Napoli and has become a central figure in Rafa Benitez's squad.

The Partenopei may be outgunned by Barcelona in the transfer market but according to Sportmediaset they are ready to challenge for Reina's services.

The Italian website cites their Spanish counterparts Il Mundo Deportivo in claiming that Napoli are readying a bid of just under £5m to convince Liverpool to sell Reina permanently to them.

Manuel Garcia Quillon is Reina's agent and also represents Benitez, which may give Napoli a headstart in negotiations.

However, it is likely that Barcelona and Reina's other alleged suitors Arsenal and Atletico Madrid could eclipse a bid of just £5m, which could be the starting point for a bidding war.
