In the summer Arsenal were looking for players in specific areas in which Arsene Wenger felt they needed to strengthen.
They needed a star player, which saw Mesut Ozil arrive, a striker, which saw interest in Gonzalo Higuain, a goalkeeper, which saw Emiliano Viviano arrive on loan from Fiorentina and a defensive midfielder.
The defensive midfielder search saw a number of players linked with an arrival. The likes of Geoffrey Kondogbia, Luiz Gustavo, Josuah Guilavogui and more were linked with the club - before they decided to take the cost-effective and seemingly excellent decision to snap up Mathieu Flamini on a free transfer.
But another option that was considered was Maxime Gonalons.
The French international has captained the side with aplomb this year and that form has seen him a much wanted commodity.
It doesn’t help matters when it is widely reported that his club need to sell in order to balance the books as the prolonged building works on their new stadium continue to drag on.
Arsenal are however still said to be in the running for another central midfielder - to add depth to a side that is challenging for silverware again after a barren spell in the wilderness.
So could they move back in for Gonalons in January?
Apparently not - as it is reported Gonalons will be joining a new team … tomorrow.
It is believed that the 24-year-old will sign for Napoli on Monday - once Lyon accept, as they are expected to do, a €13 million offer for the player.
It is believed that Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis and his Lyon counterpart Jean-Michel Aulas have an agreement in place - in which if rejected on this occasion Napoli would leave Lyon alone and move on to other targets.
In Italy they seem pretty sure already that Gonalons will be a Napoli player by the end of next week - with confirmation expected by tomorrow evening.
It’s a shame for Arsenal - because at €13 million he is an absolute steal and at 24 one for the future.
But he looks likely to be on his way to becoming a Neapolitan over the next seven days.
