Manchester United’s search for a creative player to inspire the side from midfield has been long-winded and no secret, with the Premier League champions expected to make moves for a new schemer this January.
Despite the plethora of names being linked with the Old Trafford outfit, the latest to be rumoured as a target is Napoli star Gokhan Inler.
The Switzerland international is adjudged as one of the most complete midfielders in Serie A, and looks set to star for his nation at next summer’s World Cup in Brazil.
Swiss news source Infoticker.ch has suggested that United have been keeping tabs on the 29-year-old, with a potential move in the January window on the cards. But would it be a good move?
Inler’s quality is there for all to see; a midfield general with a solid range of passing that can take control of a game. However, given the players at David Moyes’ disposal already, whether or not he is what United need remains to be seen.
Rafa Benitez uses Inler as predominantly a defensive midfielder who can start attacks with his range of passing and have a presence in front of the Napoli defence.
However, with Michael Carrick filling a similar role for the Manchester outfit, if Inler was to move to Old Trafford it could well step on a few toes.
United are in need of someone energetic that can get from box-to-box and can make something happen; Inler is not that man.
Inler certainly has the quality to play at the top level, but he does not suit United in their search for a playmaker.
