Wenger: Spurs FA Cup defeat 'not a danger'

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger looks back on last season’s FA Cup defeat to Blackburn Rovers and its consequences.

Heading into Arsenal’s FA Cup 3rd round North London derby with Tottenham Hotspur at the Emirates Stadium Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger feels another defeat can have disastrous effects on the rest of the season

Arsenal were beaten 1-0 at home by Championship side Blackburn Rovers in last season’s 5th round tie and Arsenal followed that up with a 1-3 home loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League, something Arsene Wenger put down to as a confidence blow

Reflecting on the Blackburn defeat, Arsenal.com reports:

“It was not only a low point in the season it was also something that put us in a very, very bad position to play against Bayern. You could see when we started the game against Bayern that everybody was low on confidence and it cost us a lot.

“It was a big shock and we did not have time to recover because three days later we played against Bayern at home and we were not ourselves“.

The confidence suffered from being eliminated from arguably Arsenal’s last hope of a trophy to Blackburn certainly effected them against Bayern, as the Gunners found themselves 0-2 down after 21 minutes and the tie was all but over.

The following game at home to Aston Villa was also a struggle, with the Gunners relying on a late Santi Cazorla goal in the 85th minute to claim a much needed boost ahead of their trip to White Hart Lane the following Sunday. Arsenal again struggled, going down 2-1 and seemingly in real danger of failing to qualify for this season’s Champions League.

Fortunately for Arsene Wenger’s men, that torrid two weeks seemed to disappear following victory over Bayern Munich in the return leg. Nevertheless, the Arsenal manager certainly wouldn’t want a similar situation this season, and the Frenchman has full confidence in his players, insisting a repeat of last year won’t happen again.

“That's not a danger on Saturday - the players know this will be a big game“.

Who will triumph in the game at The Emirates?
