The news Manchester United and Chelsea fans feared …but knew would come

Reports in Germany claim Robert Lewandowski is set to sign a deal with Bayern Munich, scuppering the hopes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal.

The worst kept secret in football is set to finally, and belatedly, be confirmed. At least that is if you believe German newspaper Bild, which claims Robert Lewandowski is currently having his medical prior to signing a five-year deal with Bayern Munich.

Some news is not really news at all, and this could fairly be classed in that category. After all, the Borussia Dortmund striker was believed to be destined for Pep Guardiola’s side before they were even referred to as that.

And despite his refusal to be drawn on his future plans – and the unrealistic hopes of fans of Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal all hoping he would throw a late curve-ball and sign for them instead – it appears the Polish striker is going where we all knew he would.

Bild reports that Lewandowski travelled from Warsaw to Munich earlier today, and that if his medical check goes smoothly, he will sign a pre-contract agreement that would ultimately see him move to Bayern in the summer, and remain until at least 2019.

If so, gone will be the last remnants of hope that one of Europe’s best strikers would be a Premier League star next season.

Still, he is only 25, so expect the speculation to begin again in three or four years…
