Liverpool manager gave son advice on Chelsea offer

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers wanted his son to 'earn' his first professional contract.

Rodgers has revealed that he told his son not to take up the offer of a professional contract with Premier League rivals Chelsea.

Rodgers’ son, Anton, arrived at Stamford Bridge when his father held his youth development role at the west London club. Anton was offered a deal by Chelsea, but Rodgers Snr advised him to turn it down fearing it would appear as favouritism.

In an interview with the Independent ahead of this weekend’s FA Cup third round clash between Liverpool and Oldham Athletic – for whom Anton now plays – Rodgers revealed he felt a move to Chelsea wouldn't have been in his son’s best interest.

Rodgers said: 'I think when you have a son like Anton in football he will always be deemed as if he got the prop up, no matter how he works.

Rodgers added that his biggest regret was that he and his son were never able to work together at Chelsea. He said: 'It’s something that I always wanted to happen and there was a time when it looked like he was going to step up and come in under my remit'.

Anton Rodgers instead chose Brighton & Hove Albion, moving to Oldham Athletic via a loan spell at Exeter City in League Two.
