Inter boss Walter Mazzarri has reportedly asked owner Erick Thohir to deliver Tottenham man Erik Lamela but he may have to surrender Andrea Ranocchia to Jose Mourinho to get him.
La Gazzetta dello Sport is claiming that Chelsea haven't tabled a bid for Inter's highly-rated Colombian midfielder Fredy Guarin as expected, leaving the Nerazzurri struggling to find the funds to boost their squad in the winter window.
Indonesian investor Thohir is widely believed to be determined to deliver some big name acquisitions in January to make his mark on the squad.
But without any money coming in from the sale of Guarin, Inter don't appear to have sufficient cash to convince Tottenham to let £30m man Lamela leave halfway through his maiden Premier League campaign.
La Gazzetta reports that Inter are preparing to instead sell talented defender Ranocchia to Chelsea to free up the necessary money.
Former Inter coach Mourinho is a known admirer of Ranocchia and will be on the lookout for a long term replacement for David Luiz who is said to be headed for the Stamford Bridge exit.
It still seems unlikely that Lamela will give up on the Premier League so soon and that Spurs will let such a massive investment prove to be a flop, but there have been regular reports that the lifestyle in England doesn't suit the 21-year-old and he will be scared of missing out on the World Cup should his slump continue.
