Cristian Tello will reportedly not be on his way to Anfield this winter - although four days ago he was...
Liverpool have recently been linked with the signature of Barcelona forward Cristian Tello … again. They have long been linked with the Spanish star - but have so far struggled to put together a deal to get hold of the man.
The Spanish international, in a similar fashion to Thiago Alcantara, had a release clause activated in his Barcelona deal by not featuring in enough games for the club last season - that release clause could see him leave if a club made a bid of £8.7 million.
But they were not in luck, as Tello loves playing for Barca, even if it is usually as a substitute. After a delay caused by the untimely resignation of Tito Villanova he eventually signed on the dotted line of a brand new contract with Barca - taking his release clause up to £21 million.
However he has not managed to gain significant playing time again this year - lagging behind the in-form Alexis Sanchez and Pedro Rodriguez.
Tello, who has one cap for the Spanish national team, would like to go to the World Cup in the summer - so the idea of a loan move this winter has been mooted.
Two such teams have been fellow La Liga outfit Valencia … and of course Liverpool.
Unfortunately that does not seem likely.
Marca reports today that Tello will be going nowhere in the winter. The club still feel they are quite thin on the ground in their attacking options - and are not willing to undercut their selection opportunities by allowing Tello go out on loan for the last six months of the season.
Instead he will have to earn his place in the starting line-up at the Nou Camp if he wants to play first-team football - as Anfield seems to no longer be an longer an option.
Although … the same paper reported that a loan deal to Anfield was ‘imminent’ just four days ago.
So a pinch of salt is needed.
