Paul Lambert’s men have been linked with a move for Belgian midfielder Steven Defour – which could well be an inspired piece of business.
The career of Steven Defour has seemingly taken a dip over recent years. Once touted as a major target for Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, the 25-year-old now struggles for regular game time at Porto.
As such, the Belgium international is being linked with a move away from the Portuguese giants this January transfer window, with plenty of suitors monitoring the midfielder’s situation.
Defour famously broke his right foot whilst still playing for Standard Liege in his homeland, with Ferguson writing a letter to wish him the best of recovery. This led to repeated rumours over the years that the Old Trafford club were eager to sign the talented Belgian.
However, since moving to Porto in 2011, Defour has not featured as much as he would like for the Estadio Do Dragao outfit, and fears his place at the World Cup under threat as a result.
Aston Villa have been one of the teams linked with a move for him in the January transfer window, with Defour’s agent recently admitting that there has been contact with the Midlands club.
Although injuries and other setbacks have taken their toll, Defour looks like an ideal signing for Paul Lambert’s men, with plenty of potential to turn into a real star.
With compatriot Christian Benteke at the Villa Park also, Defour could well be the signing of the window if Lambert can convince Porto to part company with the midfielder.
