La Liga side Atletico Madrid have also joined the race to sign Basle forward Mohamed Salah
According to Swiss paper Basler Zeitung, Liverpool have been joined by other suitors for target Mohamed Salah. Bayer Levekusen, VfL Wolfsburg and Manchester United have all been linked however it’s Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid that are rumoured to have stepped up.
Egyptian youngster, Mohamed Salah, has had a productive campaign so far for Swiss champions FC Basel. Salah was a key player in helping Basel qualify for this season’s Champions League, and started both games against Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea as the Swiss side memorably won both at Stamford Bridge and at St-Jakob’s Park.
Salah, dubbed the ‘Egyptian Messi’ is keen to move away from Basel, but the player is only interested in joining a club which will be playing Champions League football.
Liverpool have been linked to the player, and some reports suggests that the two parties are quite far into negotiations. Speculation arose that the Reds were to offer the winger a 5-year deal and the player was on his way to Merseyside for a medical. However, according to the Liverpool Echo, the reportedly agreed fee of £7m is quite wide of the mark.
The Liverpool Echo go on to explain that should a deal not be completed in January, then Liverpool are happy to wait until the Summer to thrash out a deal. However, with new reports listing Atletico Madrid’s interest, perhaps Liverpool won’t have opportunity to wait until the summer.
The Madrid-based side have been all over the papers in recent weeks over the potential sales of Diego Costa, Tiago and midfield sensation Koke. Nevertheless, the signing of Jose Sosa and the interest in Mohamad Salah will come as a welcome relief to the Atletico fans that the club intends to bolster an already talented squad instead of seeing key players leave.
Salah’s quick running, classy dribbling, excellent movement and potential link-up play with the likes of Luis Suarez, Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge will go down a treat with the Kop.
However Ateltico Madrid have everything to offer the player financially and on the field, so if Liverpool are serious about their intentions, they will want to tie up a deal as soon as possible or face losing out to the La Liga giants.
