Barcelona's Lionel Messi is worth hundreds of millions of Euros according to a marketing agency.
When news broke earlier this season that Adidas were willing to part fund a €250 million move for Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, plenty of people baulked at the colossal fee for a single player.
Messi is arguably the greatest player to have ever graced the game but a German agency (Euromericas Sport Marketing) has revealed what Barcelona could realistically now charge for the Argentinian forward.
Since talk of that part funded move came about, his value seems to have rocketed with a €400 million valuation now being mentioned in several Catalan news sources. The value has been worked out by the agency along with four companies in the world of sports business management.
The fee is based around Messi’s value to Barcelona as a football player, including his contract and release clause, but also his image as global football and sports star, which covers multiple countries outside of Spain.
“Leo Messi is the player most media in the world – 77% followed by 32% with Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney in third with 17.1%. This total includes 145 countries. Messi is almost 82 times the average of the 900 players who have played in the Champions League. The value of Messi (football Mix and commercial value) as the most valuable player in the world is around 400 million Euros,” reads part of a report on the Sport website.
It’s extremely difficult to work out which sides in global football would be able to afford such a staggering fee for the versatile front man.
If a deal for Messi ever came about, it would be such a huge transfer that it would completely change the transfer market as we know it and players are already being transferred for just below the £100 million mark.
