I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 3rd January 2014, but a year earlier.
What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?
Here are some of the big scoops from the 3rd January 2013 …
To Ba or not to Ba
Arsene Wenger was talking about his recent transfer dealings - as Demba Ba moved to Chelsea. The Senegalese striker had also been linked with Arsenal - but Wenger stated that he could not sign the player because he was too similar in playing style to Olivier Giroud:
“I’m sure Chelsea will have a check on that and if they sign him it is because the problem is not as big as people say. I like Demba Ba personally; he is a similar type to Giroud who we just bought. It was one or the other one.”
It came on the same day that Ba made his move to Chelsea from Newcastle United. The Blues met the Toon Army’s release clause of £7 million and finally finalised the deal - but only after some last minute wrangling.
His agent moved the goalposts on a £2 million agent’s fee - which seemed to scupper the deal.
However they thrashed through the details late at night and signed the Senegalese international.
Lamps agent gets Frank
Frank Lampard was set to leave Chelsea at the end of the season. The England international’s contract expired at the end of the season and his time at the club looked like coming to an end.
His agent Steve Kutner stated:
“As for the future, the only certainty is that he will change team at the end of the season. Frank wants to pay for a great side, capable of challenging for important targets and where he could win more trophies.”
However he went on to break Bobby Tambling’s goalscoring record and then sign a new deal in May after a great end of season run of form.
