Manchester United transfer news: Powell set for Wigan stay, Mata latest and Buttner link

A select round-up of transfer news relating to Manchester United

Just as last summer, Juan Mata and Manchester United have been thrown together in the January rumour mill.

The Manchester Evening News reports that United could be encouraged to make a move for the Spaniard after his Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho indicated that Mata could leave.

Despite saying that he wanted to keep the attacking midfielder, Mourinho hinted the attacking midfielder could leave Stamford Bridge.

The MEN states that with many of David Moyes’ reported targets unavailable until the summer, Mata could be a realistic quick-fire transfer to solve their creative issues.

But just as United refused to even consider selling Wayne Rooney to a domestic rival, surely the Blues will never allow Mata to head for Old Trafford.

In other news, the Daily Mail reports that Turkish side Galatasaray are interested in United left-back Alex Buttner – this despite a rumoured move to Genoa looking likely.

The same paper reports that Nick Powell looks set to remain at Wigan Athletic for the rest of the season, despite previous stories suggesting his loan move could be ended in favour of a temporary switch to a top-flight side.
