Transfer Bin: Arsenal looking at Benfica's Nemanja Matic

Arsenal have been reported as the latest side interested in signing Nemanja Matic from Benfica.

The latest version of HereIsTheCity’s Transfer Bin relates to a rumour which popped up on TalkSport this morning.

The point of this feature is to examine some of the high profile rumours linking players and coaches with Premier League sides, explaining why that deal is unlikely to happen.

The hugely popular site ran a story claiming that the Gunners had moved into the race to sign Benfica star Nemanja Matic, alongside the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United who have also been linked with the Serbian.

Matic has been consistent for Benfica ever since he left Chelsea and that’s created reported fees for his transfer of anywhere between £20-40 million as sides circle him like sharks around bait.

However, before Arsenal fans get too carried away, there is a very simple way this rumour can be picked apart and it relates to comments that Arsene Wenger made about another apparent midfield target; Newcastle’s Yohan Cabaye.

“On Yohan Cabaye, we don't look for a midfielder. We didn't have Mesut Ozil or Aaron Ramsey and we still had three good midfielders and Mikel Arteta on the bench [for the 1-0 win at Newcastle]” said the Arsenal boss recently.

Wenger is right because Arsenal do have possibly the best crop of midfielders in the Premier League and their priority is more than likely strengthening the defence and the attacking support options up front.

Matic’s best position is in the midfield but it’s not an area Wenger is looking to improve through his own admission, which means unless Matic is suddenly going to convert into a centre forward, this is a rumour to let slide.

There is also a justified argument to suggest that if Arsenal were in the market for another midfielder, there are plenty of other candidates the club could go after.

The summer signing of Mesut Ozil proved that the Gunners will spend big money to make deals happen and hence going after players like Marco Reus or Ilkay Gundogan of Borussia Dortmund would be arguably better options.

Chelsea have been linked with Matic because he used to play for them, Manchester United have been linked with him because they do need a midfielder, Manchester City have been linked because they can afford his fee but Arsenal have no need for a player of Matic’s type in their current squad.

TalkSport are generally a very reliable source but this idea seems a little too far fetched to be realistic based on the recent way Wenger has acted and the potential Arsenal currently enjoy in midfield.

Rubbish rating: Sack Wenger if it happens because that would be proof he’s lost his marbles.
