On this day: Arsenal reject Sneijder, Sturridge signs and Baines wonderstrike

Daniel Sturridge Liverpool

On the 2nd January 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Everton.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 2nd January 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 2nd January 2013 …

No dice for Sneij

Arsenal and Chelsea reportedly turned down a potential move for Inter Milan and Netherlands playmaker Wesley Sneijder.

The Dutchman was at the time being touted around for free as his situation with the Nerazzuri became increasingly murky.

But despite his obvious quality as one of the best playmakers in the world the two London clubs, who were reportedly offered the chance to bid for the player, said they didn’t want him - because of his massive wage demands.

Sneijder was said to be after £200k-a-week - and he went on to sign for Turkish outfit Galatasaray 19 days later.

Sturridge Bridge switch

Liverpool became one of the first big movers of the Transfer Window - as they snapped up Daniel Sturridge from Chelsea.

The talented forward was not receiving regular first team football at Stamford Bridge - and Brendan Rodgers knew of him from his time working in London.

He has since gone on to score 22 goals in 30 appearances for the club - not a bad signing at all.

Get your hands Leight-on that

Everton beat Newcastle United 2-1 at St James Park - and a sensational goal from Leighton Baines was the undisputed highlight of the game.

Papiss Cisse had given the home side the lead - while Victor Anichebe scored the winner.

But this was certainly the highlight of the game…
