Remy Cabella was once valued at €100 million ... now it is set at €18 million.
The Frenchman, once dubbed ‘the next Zidane’ is said to be ready to leave Montpellier after a difficult campaign at the club - which sees them in a relegation battle to survive in Ligue 1.
Of course Newcastle are no strangers to January deals for talented Gallic’s and Cabella would certainly fit the bill.
However … how much would he cost?
In June the clubs chairman Laurent Nicollin had this to say in regards to potentially selling the playmaker:
"He is non-transferable. The desire of the club is to keep Remy - he was told and knows this. If a club arrives and offers €100million, it will be discussed though."
However just two weeks later the clubs owner, Louis Nicollin, decided to HALF his valuation!
This sort of bizarre transfer valuation is not unusual for Montpellier. They once valued Olivier Giroud at €50 million and then proceeded to sell him to Arsenal for just over £10m.
So it is no surprise that the seemingly less ambitious club owner Louis Nicollin slashed his asking price so dramatically in just a fortnight:
‘’He will not go away, it is clear, clean and crisp! We do not need money, he will remain there, he even has a three-year contract. Except stupendous offer 50 million. "
But history shows that Montpellier are often a club that is always willing to do business at the right price; and believe you me - €50 million is not the price they would ask for.
Manager Jean Fernandez admitted a more moderate fee could convince the side to part company with the star.
"He is an intelligent boy who has made a good start to the season. Now in the winter transfer window if Manchester United offers €18million, as I see it, he must go. Even if you 'kill the team', you can't refuse."
The fact is valuation is plummeting by the month suggests one thing - Montpellier accept that he must go if they are to develop. His value has now dropped by an astonishing €82 million since October - which tells you how much Montpellier are willing to do business.
And if they pushed them - Newcastle could probably get him for €15m.
