A round up of the latest news and transfer stories about Liverpool from the last 24 hours.
Brendan Rodgers has praised the courage of striker Luis Suarez after he scored against Hull City yesterday. Rodgers has revealed that the forward played the game with a bad foot injury, which he picked up in the defeat at Chelsea.
“It was a bad knock on his foot, and most players wouldn't have played a few days later. There's a lot of strapping on it, but there was never any question in his mind. He wanted to be out there for the good of the team, and it's that sort of attitude that enables him to score the goals he does,” he said according to the Daily Mail.
Liverpool boss Rodgers has warned the club’s rivals over the fear factor the club is building at Anfield. The club’s main rivals for the Premier League title are still to visit Anfield this season which Rodgers believes will work in his team’s favour.
“All the top teams apart from United have to come to Anfield, and we are a force there. If we can reinforce this group of players during January, it will set us up nicely,” said the boss.
Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson says he was glad the side managed to grind out an important win against Hull City. Liverpool secured a 2-0 win against Hull thanks to goals from Daniel Agger and Luis Suarez.
Simon Mignolet has also bathed in the glory of the win, saying it’s important the side can now stay in the top four having seen their Premier League lead slip away last month.
“It’s always nice to be back in the top four – it’s where we want to be. The only thing we can do is look forward and ahead to the next game,” he told the club website.
The match also saw the return of club captain Steven Gerrard to first team action, just at the right time before this weekend’s FA Cup clash against Oldham. Rodgers has described it as vitally important to have Gerrard available again.
In transfer news, Liverpool’s highly reported move for FC Basel star Mohamed Salah remains on according to the Mirror. The Liverpool Echo has claimed a deal is still on the cards but reports that no deal has been agreed contrary to a £7 million deal which has already been mentioned.
Liverpool are also in line to make a fresh move for Barcelona defender Martin Montoya, with reports from Spain suggesting contract talks with the Spanish club have stalled.
“At the moment everything is stopped. The situation is clear - if we cannot reach an agreement on a new contract, Montoya will be free to find a new club. It's a complicated situation,” Montoya’s agent Josep Orobitg told TMW.
There may also shortly be a resolution to the future of Derby County youngster Will Hughes. Liverpool have been widely linked with the midfielder, but it still remains speculation and rumour despite the Mirror suggesting that Liverpool have agreed a first option deal on the player.
Former striker Emile Heskey has urged the club’s fans not to panic this month and he believes that Brendan Rodgers will sign players who can prove to be genuine match winners whether they start or come off the bench.
