They fought off competition in the Premier League and the Brazilian is showing exactly why.
During the summer transfer window Willian was one of the most sought after players in the Premier League.
Both Liverpool and Tottenham were interested in the player when Anzhi Makhachkala put him up for sale, but it was Chelsea who the forward chose, and of late his performances for the Blues have shown why he was one of the most sought after players amongst Premier League clubs.
Liverpool themselves got a display against them from Willian as to just how good he is. His work rate was phenomenal, his control of the ball second to none and against Southampton on New Years’ Day he showed the finishing ability he has in the final third. Twice he has found the net for Chelsea during his half a season at the club, and twice they have been picture book goals – the other coming against Norwich earlier on in the season.
When he has been on the field he has looked like the type of player that could be the difference between Chelsea winning a trophies this season and not.
Pace, power, finishing ability and he gives full-backs a torrid time in the wide positions. Is it any wonder that Mourinho splashed in excess of £30m to get him ahead of his Premier League rivals?
Given that he provides his team with a great deal of flexibility and impact, the 25-year-old Brazilian looks as if he could be an integral part of Mourinho’s second spell at Stamford Bridge.
Expect him to kick on for the rest of the season.
