The performance may not have been Liverpool at its best, but after back-to-back defeats Wednesday's victory was a job well done.
Earlier on in the season when, Liverpool had three consecutive 1-0 wins, they showed determination to defend a lead when they were on the back foot - particularly against Aston Villa and Manchester United.
But Liverpool showed something different on Wednesday. Having been humbled by Hull City at the KC Stadium just a month before, Liverpool worked out how to effectively deal with the physical threat of Yannick Sagbo. Captain for the day Daniel Agger seemed to relish the battle with the big Hull forward, something which Liverpool fans aren't accustomed to seeing.
Wednesday was far from pretty, with Hull manager Steve Bruce setting his side up to stop Liverpool anyway they could - which included some cynical foul play. The Reds never really got into their stride, but the overall performance is surely a sign that Liverpool can deal effectively with physical football, and that they don’t have to be at 100% to nab all 3 points - even with several players still missing.
Lots of positives for Liverpool fans yesterday.
