All the talk, gossip and conjecture from Arsenal FC this morning...
It was reported late last night and now the news has continued into the mornning - as Arsenal are being linked with an audacious bid to sign former Tottenham Hotspur hero Dimitar Berbatov.
Berbatov, whose agent recently admitted his client could be after a move away from Fulham, scored yesterday in The Cottagers 2-1 win over relegation rivals West Ham United. But with Olivier Giroud now picking up an injury the sheer lack of strikers at the club has now become painfully evident.
Berba provides a world-class option and with his contract expiring in the summer may not be an expensive one either - at a reported £2 million.
The need for another striker was exacerbated yesterday as Nicklas Bendtner left the field of play against Cardiff City in some agony.
Bendtner seemed to twist his ankle in a collision with the Cardiff keeper - in an action that saw him score Arsenal’s opener.
The Dane is said to be out for ‘weeks’ and provides Wenger with yet another overwhelming reason to plunge in for a striker this winter.
Meanwhile Bendtner, who has previously stated a desire to leave The Emirates, now seems ready to stay.
Wenger claims the striker has told him of this desire after showing glimpses of good form in his fleeting cameos this season:
“It is January 1 so we cannot stop him [talking to foreign clubs about Bosman] but he says he wants to stay here. If he is focused on staying with us and his job, he is a great striker.”
Arsenal’s apparent interest in the ‘next Mertesacker’ Matthias Ginter appears to be fruitless now. The talented SC Freiburg star - who has been scouted by The Gunners in the past - is now being watched intently by Bundesliga powerhouses Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.
The player himself has openly confirmed the interest from both teams and it seems he could be on his way from Freiburg before the end of this month - and Arsenal will not be the destination.
