Here's something sent in by an Arsenal fan on the subject of the club's striker transfer options.
'You honestly think Lewandowski will be coming to Arsenal in January ?
While Dortmund might prefer to sell him in January - and make some money since they are more or less out of the title race given Bayern's form - why would he move ? A player in good form that takes the risk of running down his contract gets rewarded with massive wages - because the club signing him doesn't have to pay any transfer fee. So even if Arsenal were willing to offer him a massive contract, he won't be arriving until the summer.
Costa is another option, but it's unlikely he'd want to leave Atlético Madrid in the middle of an incredible season. They are frontrunners in La Liga and have a winnable tie in the next round of the Champions League, so it seems far more likely that he'll move on this summer too, probably after the World Cup.
I think Berbatov, however, would be a great signing now. Giroud should, however, remain Arsenal's first choice striker. Berbatov has looked like a shadow of his former self, but I attribute that more to a lack of motivation playing in a team like Fulham, rather than a total loss of ability. He was never a player that relied on pace or physicality, so I see no reason why he can't return to good form as Arsenal's second choice striker. Factor in that Berbatov is CL eligible (if needed), and I believe he would be a good signing in January.
Just because there's money in the bank doesn't mean Arsenal can sign many of the players some fans appear to be clamouring for. We need to be realistic, and also understand that signing a replacement rather than a backup for Giroud would dent his confidence - when we need the Frenchman motivated for the rest of the season.
Come the summer, let's sign someone world class, but for now I think just some back up will keep us in contention for the title'.
Can Arsenal get by with 'back up' striker Berbatov ?
