Sources for the Daily Mail have reported that Atletico Madrid have emerged as a shock destination for Greek international striker Georgios Samaras. The Celtic striker has put his future in doubt after failing to extend his current deal which expires in the summer.
Samaras has been in solid form for Celtic this season, scoring four SPL goals in 11 appearances. The 28-year-old has reportedly grown tired of the lack of competition in Scotland and has vowed to move on to an ambitious club, one playing in a more competitive league capable of winning silverware.
The former Manchester City striker has his suitors, with Steve Bruce admitting he has an eye on his current situation.
‘Everyone is aware of the situation with his (Samaras’) contract and I am sure all of us have looked,’ said Bruce last week. ‘He’s a good player, but I have not expressed any real interest.’
However, it appears that the Rojiblancos have tabled the first offer, although it isn’t clear yet if the offer is a cash one and the transfer is intended for January.
Either way, with Atletico offering for a new striker, Arsenal and Chelsea will be licking their lips at the possibility of Diego Costa becoming available. There is no comparing the two directly, but Samaras could become a stop-gap if they are unable to hold onto Costa.
The La Liga striker has been in red hot form for Diego Simeone’s side this season, scoring 19 goals in just 16 league starts. The attacker has totaled 57 shots this season, meaning he has a conversion rate of a La Liga high 33%
The Brazilian born striker has been linked with a whole host of leading clubs, including the Premier League’s top teams. With Diego Simeone offering Samaras a route to Spain, Arsenal and Chelsea who both need strikers could well see this as the perfect opportunity to activate the coveted striker’s £32m release clause.
Will Atletico sign Samaras in January and allow Diego Costa to leave?
