Bayern Munich are reported to have stolen a march on Champions League opponents Arsenal in the race to sign Matthias Ginter.
The defender, tipped to replace Per Mertesacker in the German national team, currently plays for Freiburg in the Bundesliga.
German magazine SportBild report that champions Bayern Munich are eyeing him to strengthen their already strong side and have opened discussions over his future.
They write Ginter would fit into their plans as a replacement for Daniel van Buyten, who is 35, while Holger Badstuber is suffering a serious knee injury.
Ginter's versatility to play as a defensive midfielder would also appeal to Pep Guardiola.
The Mirror reported back in the summer that Arsenal had sent scouts to watch the German prospect and had also approached Freiburg about a deal, although he appears not to be a priority at present.
Bayern's interest could force their hand if they are serious about adding another top German talent to their team and defence
If not then it appears the best may be about to get even better.
