Inter to step up Lamela pursuit after Lavezzi refusal

Ezequiel Lavezzi’s rejection of a move may signal an increased effort from Inter to net Erik Lamela.

The Paris Saint-Germain man has found the going tough this term – netting just twice in Ligue 1 as he’s struggled to hit top gear, however Lavezzi wants to stay the course.

The arrival of Edinson Cavani on top of Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s presence has limited the Argentine’s opportunities, leading to speculation a January departure in view of the World Cup.

Inter have been heavily linked with the attacker as his former boss at Napoli, Walter Mazzarri, reportedly requested of owner Erick Thohir that the 28-year-old be brought to San Siro.

Yet the operation has always looked a difficult one for the Nerazzurri, and a previously coy Lavezzi has now definitively ruled out a Serie A return with the Milanese giants.

“It is pleasing to be of interest to great clubs like Inter,” he told Canal Football Club.

“But I will remain at PSG, I’m involved in the project and I don’t want to leave.

“I don’t think I’ve given my best in Paris yet, so I want to do better and change that situation.

“I realise the doors are open for me in Italy, but I am happy here. The day they tell me to leave, I probably will go.”

The forward’s comments means Inter will be required to look for reinforcements elsewhere – a process that has already begun.

Reports have intensified over recent days of the club’s interest in taking Tottenham Hotspur signing Erik Lamela on loan for the remainder of the season.

And Lavezzi’s refusal to leave the French capital could see the Nerazzurri ramp up their pursuit of the former Roma man in January.

La Gazzetta dello Sport have maintained that Lamela is the number one objective for the San Siro outfit in the new year, whilst Italian transfer guru Gianluca Di Marzio claimed over the weekend Tottenham would give Tim Sherwood until January 15 to evaluate the 21-year-old.

Spurs of course aren’t willing to flog off their record signing by any means, but regular minutes are concern for Lamela ahead of the festivities in Brazil over the summer and a temporary Italian renaissance may suit all parties involved.

With Lavezzi out of reach the full press for his younger countryman will be on from Inter, with the Nerazzurri undoubtedly hoping to see a deal done if Tottenham can be persuaded.
